    Hi,

On a Windows 7 Home Premium PC (64-bit) HP PC, I tried to change the name of an image contained within the following folder:
    C:\Users\Bruce\Documents\Websites\www.example.dev\wp-content\themes\stitch_red-black_travel\Site\themed_images

    From: themed_object.png — To: themed_object-saved.png

Upon attempting to do this, 100% of the files within this directory changed from their original file names to the following (partial directory listing below):

    Index of C:\Users\Bruce\Documents\Websites\www.example.dev\wp-content\themes\stitch_red-black_travel\Site\themed_images\

    themed_object-saved (21).jpg 55.2 kB 9/9/12 3:11:41 PM …. and so on.

Is there some way to edit image names within the directory structure NOT using the WordPress media manager since some themes, as the above, have some sitewide images in folders other than where WordPress would normally store them?

Also, just curious as to why Windows did this in the first place.

    Thanks very much!!

    Hello Bruce,
It appears that your mouse or keyboard button is stuck or there is a malfunction with a device/device driver somewhere. The screenshots you have supplied show that all files have been selected in Windows’ explorer and any operation will occur within the context of the multiple selected files (multiple selections appear in with a blue highlight). Was your intension to select one file (only one file should be highlighted blue)?

Rather than renaming one selected file, it appears you’ve told Windows to rename everything to a new naming schema; Windows will enumerate all your selected images accordingly.

    Hi Stephen,

An extremely interesting observation on your part of all the images showing in the selected state! While that was not my intention, it certainly shows that all were selected at the time of the screenshot and, yes, that would account for the mass renaming that took place. I appreciate the quick reply back and also what is a very plausible explanation as to what caused the reported problem. Thanks very much and best regards,

    Bruce
